|  The Shanghai Power Equipment Research Institute (hereinafter referred to as the SPERI) was founded in 1959 and it was formerly known as the Steam Turbine & Boiler Research Institute under the First Machinery Industry Department. It is the Class I Research Institute for development and application of the national power generation equipment manufacturing industry in China. On July 1st, 1999, it was transformed to a science and technology based enterprise with localization management. It was renamed the Shanghai Power Equipment Research Institute with approval in March, 2006. On October 27th, 2011, SPERI joined the State Nuclear Power Technology Corporation.On July 15th,2015,State Power Investment Corporation (SPIC) was established through the merger of China Power Investment Corporation and State Nuclear Power Technology Corporation.
It mainly engages in the research on common technologies and key technologies for the three major areas including thermal power, clean energy (nuclear power and gas turbine power generation) and new energy, which involves the professional disciplines including aerodynamics, combustion and heat transfer, strength and vibration, materials and welding, automatic control, electrical technology, system integration, supervision technology, etc. With the implementation of key national projects and the construction of the three major platforms as major carriers including the Machinery Industry Power Equipment Quality Supervision and Testing Center of Fossil Power Equipment, the National Engineering Research Center of Power Equipment for Clean and Efficient Utilization of Coal and the State Nuclear Equipment and Material Qualification & Consultant Center, it develops the unique technology-oriented enterprise ability of technical research and development/services, product research and development/manufacture, engineering design/general contracting and testing and qualification/consultation.
SPERI has undertaken the introduction, assimilation and absorption, optimization and improvement of major equipment development programs, such as national major packaged equipment of 300MW and 600MW thermal power generation units. It has undertaken more than 500 major scientific and technological problem projects in the State and Shanghai. It has carried out thousands of scientific and technological development projects consigned by the enterprises in the power generation equipment industry and electric power industry and won 187 major scientific and technological achievement awards and new product awards of the State, Ministries and Shanghai. Wherein, it won the Second Prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award in 2002 and 2003 respectively for totally 2 times, it won the First Class Prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award in 2008 for 1 time. It has applied for 104 national patents, wherein include 58 invention patents. It has developed very strong and comprehensive strength in terms of key technologies for thermal power generation equipment and independent innovation of equipment and had a solid technical base in terms of independent development of new energy technologies and heavy gas turbines. At the same time, it plays a role in technically leading the research on key equipment and technologies for conventional island equipment for nuclear power, the research on system integration optimization and nuclear power standard system and the establishment and conversion of standards. It also accumulates abundant experience in the localization research and performance assessment of nuclear grade materials and specialized welding materials, research and engineering application of welding technology, power station equipment overseeing, etc. It has successfully carried out the independent development of the nuclear grade equipment including electrical penetration assembly, and possessed dozens of mainstream products converted from proprietary technologies and scientific and technological achievements.
SPERI has the authorization to award master degrees for relevant majors of the first level disciplines including power engineering and engineering thermo-physics. It is a member of the Machinery Industry Power Equipment Quality Supervision and Inspection Center (QSIC), a member of the Chinese Society of Power Engineering, a council member of the China Machinery Industry Federation, the vice president and standing director of the China Electrical Equipment Industrial Association, the chairman and secretary general of the Boiler Branch of China Standardization Committee on Boilers and the Standardization Committee on Steam Turbines, the secretary general unit of the Steam Turbine Branch of China Electrical Equipment Industrial Association, the council president of the Power Station Auxiliary Equipment Branch of China Electrical Equipment Industrial Association and the leader of the China Power Generation Equipment Industry Information Network. It sponsors the national first-class publications: the Journal of Power Engineering and the Power Equipment.
